Science teaching techniques

There are many ways to teach sciences. Contents play a role to boost motivation in students, but my experience while teaching left me with just a few basics that were crucial. 1. Always offer more than it is required (meaning: be more than well prepared on the subject) 2. Let students voice their ideas and treat them seriously. 3. With difficult and complex contents encourage small step questions the students should ask and answer within their group. 4. Relate to everyday situations as often as possible 5. Start each science week with some short students'reports from newspapers (the old technique of "show and tell")covering any science topic; you might come across new ideas from the students' perspective. 6. Never use "fill in the blank" laboratory sheets, instead have the students find their own language and technique to describe what they observe. 7. Let the students do as much as possible by themselves during practical, even repetitive steps. 8. Encourage "failure reports" by discussing reasons and solutions within the group. 9. Let the students develop models or flow charts for complex issues 10. Share good and bad experiences with the student group and with your colleagues. 10. Summing up: The reward lies in the finished labjournal.
